The Christmas Eve for Thais in the US.

Dear son,
in Brooklyn, NYC

It has been a turbulent time for people living in snow zone, like in the north of the United States, Europe along the Alp Rhone Region, mountainous areas.

However, in Thailand, during the month of December of every year, it is usually great. Firstly, people in hospitality related business, like hotels, tour agencies, restaurants, etc. they are happy for there will be more customers than usual. Secondly, November and December are the cooler months – 23-32 degree Celsius are considerably good – 22-23 degree Celsius during the night time and not more than 32 degree Celsius at the maximum, which is ok for me. Thirdly, and particularly this year, people are beginning to be more relaxed and confident in the prospect of Thai economy. There are many signs showing that we will be better from now on.

However, weather is just like our life. We have good time and bad time, up and down, and whatever we have, we will have to bear with it.

Dear son – Christmas time is the time westerners like the Americans will celebrate and go to visit their families, back to their home town, and see their parents and relatives. I could remember the time I was a Thai student studying in a small university town in the United States. Thanksgivings and Christmas times were quite lonely for foreign students like me then. The university was closed during the eve, so I watched TV, old movies, watching American footballs, all kinds of Bowls (Special Football Games) and spent sometime writing letters home (back to my parents in Thailand).

It may be the time you find a girl you love and she loves you. It doesn’t matter who she is, Thai or non-Thai, rich or poor, it may be the time you consider having a family of your own. There was a proverb, “The rolling stones gather no moss.” It suggested that it is about time you have to settle down, having a family of your own, have a house of your own, have kids, and learn parenting.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year 2010.
